The ensaimada is a pastry that it truly local to Mallorca - an island off the east coast of Spain in the Balearic Islands. You may have heard of the party island of the group - Ibiza. Mallorca itself is a beautiful place and it’s always good to try local food when visiting a country, city or even an island!
So what is an ensaimada you ask? Well we did. Basically its a pastry that’s commonly eaten here for breakfast nor brunch. It’s made in a spiral circle and comes dusted with icing sugar. It’s light, fluffy and totally delicious.
Ca’n Joan de s’Aigo is a bakery that’s been around for over 300 years but the’ve moved in to operating as a café much later. This place is famous for its chocolate and particularly it’s ensaimadas. Where better to sample the local wares! It’s a pretty place too, down a laneway in a back street. The room itself is like stepping back in time.
This place is quirky and interesting. It’s like grandma’s drawing room with plenty to see. The main drawcard though is undoubtedly trying their ensaimada’s.
They do a roaring trade here so things move quickly. Your order will arrive fairly promptly but they don’t rush you. Grab an ensaimada for breakfast and get set to hit the town. It’s the perfect fuel for a busy day in Palma.
