Social Brew Cafe
224 Harris St
Pyrmont, Sydney
Any Sydney-sider will tell you that the sign of a good brunch spot is one with a queue, and we’re all willing to wait. And as we approached Social Brew in Pyrmont, it was the gathering of people out the front that made us realise we were in the right spot.
Greeted by the friendly owner Andrew, we were immediately made to feel right at home by our waiter Stephen. Although not overstated, Social Brew is comfortable and trendy with funky covers of pop songs subtly playing in the background, somewhere you could easily picture visiting regularly on a Sunday morning.
We started our breakfast venture with some coffees, which we ordered large - and they delivered. The mocha and long black we ordered were great, which we happily sipped on while perusing the menu.
Social Brew offers all day breakfast and lunch menus which are definitely a crowd-pleaser amongst the patrons around us, who were ordering everything from a burger and chips, to a salad, to the muesli and yoghurt. We stuck to the breakfast menu and settled on the apple cider Eggs Benedict and the Slow cooked Northern beans with a side of grilled halloumi.
The Eggs Benedict came on a generously sized brioche slice which was perfectly toasted and topped with fresh, lightly sautéed spinach. I am stickler when it comes to bacon but Social Brew has it perfected – thick and crispy but not overcooked. The poached eggs were delicious and runny in the centre and the apple cider vinegar really helps set them apart from the usual. The hollandaise was slightly more subtle which ensured it didn’t overpower the other flavours. This dish was impressive when it hit the table and continued to delight to the last mouthful.
The slow cooked northern beans were warming, homely and very filling. The spicy chorizo packed a nice punch and the roasted capsicum added a lovely sweetness to the dish. Grilled halloumi is always a favourite so I couldn't go past adding this to my breakfast choice. Needless to say, the eggs were poached perfectly and I was very happy with my choice from the variety of options on the menu.
We were tempted by the fresh juices we’d seen walk past us throughout our breakfast, so we decided to try the green juice which included apple, pear, kale, spinach, zucchini, ginger and lemon. Although it sounds very green, it was a refreshing and light way to end the meal. Social Brew suggest the addition of a shot to spike each of the juices, if you’re feeling up to it.
The Viscountess and Viscount visited as guests of Social Brew Cafe. A big thank you to Andrew, Stephen and the team at Social Brew for having us. We will definitely be back. Special thanks to Kaycee from CPM Online Marketing Solutions for arranging this visit.
