Delhi By The Way
42 Kellett St
Potts Point, Sydney
Nestled in a quiet "eat" street in Potts Point - Kellett St to be precise - is Delhi By The Way. They have been open for 9 months and can seat up to 80 to 90. There are various seating areas inside and they are all quite different. As you arrive there is the beautiful intimate outside area, then the picturesque inside area with stone walls and adorned with some amazing décor. A very romantic private room at the back and then located up a lovely staircase is another area again that is quite spacious. Delhi By The Way oozes charm and is such a pretty place. The menu has a very good variety of Northern styled Indian dishes and there are also some "fusion" styled choices too. They also have a banquet menu from as few as 2 people and are open from Tuesday's to Sunday's for dinner from 5pm with the last order taken around 10.30pm. They are closed on Monday's.
We tried some Poppadoms which had an unique "Swiss cheese" look to them. The poppadoms had pepper thorough them and came with a serving of raita - or mint yoghurt sauce. The were light and crispy and we loved the big peppery kick! They were delicate in appearance and they went so well with the coolness of the tasty mint sauce. To drink Mlady had a glass of Tempranillo and Sir had a GSM - both drinks went well with the meal well.
As our meals arrived the aroma was incredibly appetising. Our first dish was the Onion Bhaji - tasty crispy deep-fried onion fritters with mint sauce and a date and tamarind chutney/ sauce. This was an amazing Onion Bahji! It had a wonderful delicate crunch with great flavours and textures. We both love mint sauce but this date and tamarind chutney/sauce was incredible. The taste really was so good. Both sauces went so very well with this and it had to be one of the best Onion Bhaji's. Simply loved this dish! We then tried the Hara Kebab - deep fried baby spinach patties fused with aromatic Indian spices. Loving spinach - this dish was a winner. A great tasty dish with a lovely bite.
The Lahsooni Jheenga - garlic flavour tandoori prawns were so colourful and vibrant on the black slate. They were nice and tasty, plump and juicy and lightly cooked so they were lovely and moist.
The Malibu prawns were plump prawns cooked in a creamy coconut gravy and a Malibu liqueur. This was such a tasty dish. It had amazing flavours with a great creamy coconut gravy - YUM! The Baigan Ka Bharta - tandoor roasted eggplant sautéed on pan with mellow spices. We thought we would try a vegetable dish and this was a really lovely flavoured one which we both thoroughly enjoyed. Next was the Jungli Murgh - chicken marinated with freshly ground spices cooked with baby spinach. Great combinations and again such a wonderfully flavoured and coloured dish - loved it!
The naan's that we had were plain and also cheese and olive. The plain naan had a lovely texture and a nice buttery taste. OMG how good was the cheese and olive naan. Different and a great combination. They were both so soft and it was so good combining them with the various tasty sauces with our dishes. Our serving of Basmati rice also combined well with our dishes and soaked up the great flavoured sauces.
You should also take the time to read the interesting and educational paper that is on the table - it is a nice touch.
For dessert we had the Rasmala - rich cheesecake soaked in saffron and milk. This was beautifully presented in a gorgeous high glass. A nice cool dessert to finish our meal. The other dessert we tried was the Delhi Ke Sardi (Mango & raisin Kulfi) . Being a huge fan of mango's this dish was "Oh so good"!
The food here is absolutely lovely, the presentation enhances the visually appetising dishes and the servings are generous. Chef Padam has created a wonderfully varied and scrumptious menu. Seriously "Do yourself a favour"!
Sir and Mlady dined as guests of Delhi By The Way. A big thank you to Susheel, Ash and Nouman for looking after us on the night.
