The Grounds of the City
500 George St
Sydney CBD
The name “The Grounds” is well known in Sydney and for good reasons too. The big sister in Alexandria is a sprawling place and it draws big crowds. The newer venue - The Grounds of the City - enjoys similar popularity with regular queues. They do move fairly quickly though - and it’s worth waiting.
Of course their coffee is a cornerstone so we started with a couple of cups and worked through the difficult decisions around what to choose to eat.
We were both eyeing off the omelette with tea-smoked trout rillettes, but Mlady got in first with this choice. This turned out to be a massive dish with a hefty omelette encasing plenty of trout inside. It also came with a nice radish salad, a lemon wedge and some crème fraiche. This was certainly a dish for a big appetite - and a very tasty dish as well.
Sir rather uncharacteristically then chose the Turkish poached eggs. These were served with whipped organic yoghurt, cauliflower rice, Aleppo pepper and a side of sourdough toast on a separate plate. He thoroughly enjoyed the creamy textures of the dish and the variety of flavours that combined so well.
The Grounds of the City is quite an expansive place. It has “outside” seating (which is actually inside the arcade), plenty of booths around the place and also bar seating where you can watch all the coffee magic take place.
The Grounds of the City is a great venue. Their food, service and décor are all great. Put this one on your list.
