Bangbang Café
113 Reservoir St
Surry Hills, Sydney
It would be easy to miss this funky little eatery, located in a quiet tree-lined street amid terrace houses. Believe me though, if you did, you’d be missing out. Even so, it was busy on this Sunday so it is obviously known by the locals.
There is outdoor footpath seating as well as the warmly lit indoors, featuring a really cool mix of furniture pieces which add to the character of the place. It’s quirky and interesting and the food is very good.
If you like a good burger, this place is for you. Apart from the menu, there are blackboard burger specials which change regularly. If you prefer, you can build your own from the “Daff’s Deli” board by choosing everything from your bread type through to the finishing sauce.
Although they specialise in burgers, there are plenty of very enticing breakfast, brunch and lunch options.
We started with a good coffee (kind of important for a cafe!) while we decided on our order. The coffee, by 5 Senses, was prepared well by the barista and was an impressive heart-starter.
Of course we wanted a burger and the “Superbowl” was the hot special for the weekend. It was spectacular – a towering temptation in a basket with lovely crispy shoestring fries. Layers of goodies such as crunchy fried chicken, lashings of crispy bacon, deep fried onion rings and lettuce and oozing with a delicious house-made blue cheese sauce! The chicken was super moist and tender and everything went so well together.
From the breakfast menu we chose the “Breakfast Stack”, which sounded like a wonderful combination. We weren’t disappointed when it arrived. The thick potato rosti was made with shredded potato and topped with wilted spinach, a poached egg and crispy pancetta, all drizzled in delectable hollandaise sauce. We’d call this breakfast heaven and we rolled our eyes as we devoured this awesome dish.
Now for something sweet!
How does a plate full of pancakes with banana, walnut and caramel sauce sound?
They were food for the eyes indeed.
The buckwheat pancakes were topped so generously and the sticky caramel was a real treat.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Bangbang and would definitely recommend it as one of our new favourite places. The prices are very reasonable and the helpings are generous – but most importantly, the food is great. We will be back!
Those Dames, who review for Sir and Mlady Dine Out, dined as guests of Bangbang Cafe. Thanks to Akkshey for looking after us so well. Special thanks also Bangbang Cafe owner Matt for this invitation.
