Moroccan Feast
127 Avoca St
Randwick, Sydney
To stand out in an area like Randwick, where there is food on every corner, you need to do something different and you need to do it well. The team at Moroccan Feast in Randwick did both of these things. The food was incredible (who knew Moroccan food was so good?) and it’s a unique take in an area with such great food.
The restaurant decor is understated yet thoughtful with authentic decorations all the way from the entry way through to the bathroom. The staff were friendly and the restaurant had a very welcoming, family restaurant feeling. We took our seats and had a look through the menu, which was simple but looked incredible. We left the menu selection to the chef, as we weren’t really sure what to order from a Moroccan restaurant - and we’re glad we did.
To kick start our menu was the Agadir Feast which was a selection of dips (hummus, roasted eggplant with homemade agile, chilli Harissa, fez mathbua and lemon & herbs), salads (lentil & capsicum, beetroot, cabbage & coriander, carrot and spiced chickpea) and bread which were absolutely incredible. The carrot salad, homemade hummus and lentils with capsicum were the absolute standouts. Each of the dishes has such a unique and fresh flavour and served with fresh housemade bread, this was an incredible way to start our meal. This could easily be shared between 3 - 4 people as a starter.
Next up, we were served vegetable pastilles and spicy cigars. The spicy cigars were crispy and crunchy with a beautiful dense spiced mince filling and served with homemade tahini sauce. They were the perfect size and just absolutely filled with flavours of different spices. The vegetable pastilles were soft, creamy and delicate and were equally as delicious.
The last of our appetisers was the hummus and falafel bowl. The Viscountess is a big falafel fan, and these were amongst the best she’s ever tried. Crispy and crunchy on the outside, and fluffy in the middle - they were absolutely delightful. Served with the hummus just took these to another level and we could have quite happily ended our meal there. These are a must try and a great starter to share while deciding on your main - a must try!
Finally came the stars of the evening - the beef and red wine and the lamb chop tagines. Slow cooked over several hours, the meat was so tender it just fell apart. The beef tagine had a slightly stronger flavour with red wine and onions, and served on a bed of couscous this was the Viscountess’ favourite. The beef was tender and juicy and although quite a simple dish, the flavours were absolutely incredible. The lamb chop tagine was slightly sweeter with dried apricot, almonds and a lovely cinnamon flavour. This was the Viscount’s favourite of the two, although we were both happy to share and eat half of each. We’d definitely recommend grabbing a few variations of these to share on the table. You’ll regret not trying them all!
Finally, even though we were absolutely bursting at the seams, we couldn’t resist having dessert. A traditional Moroccan donut rolled in cinnamon and sugar, it was hot, crispy and fluffy - and absolutely delicious. Served with mint tea (which we are definitely going to try and make at home), a perfect way to end this absolute adventure of a meal.
A huge thank you to the team at Moroccan Feast for having us and welcoming us so warmly into your restaurant. We definitely recommend checking this place out - make sure you come armed with a big appetite and stretchy pants. It’s worth it!
The Viscountess and Viscount dined as guests of Moroccan Feast. Special thanks to the crew at the great meal deal site Ompty.com for arranging this visit.
