Muum Maam
6/23 Barangaroo Ave
Barangaroo, Sydney
You may have seen the name before. Muum Maam have two venues - one in Surry Hills and this one in Barangaroo. The name Muum Maam actually means little glutton - or to eat sloppily - and it’s hard not to be a bit of a glutton here as the food is so tasty! It’s a great spot too - looking out across the water of Darling Harbour from your covered al fresco seating.
We started with a couple of Sydney rock oysters that came served with nahn jim on top. This spicy, tangy topping went really well with the oysters and surprisingly didn’t overpower them either. We were able to clearly taste all the flavours in this interesting combination. It was a great way to kick off the meal.
Next was our “dish of the night” - Moreton Bay bug betel leaves. These edible leaves came topped with a great mix of bug meat, peanuts, lime, chilli and toasted coconut. it was a party in our mouths. The flavours were so wonderful and the mix of textures worked perfectly too. We only ordered one each, but then had to order more - they were that good!
They have a busy bar here too churning out wine, beer and of course cocktails. Our two choices were a ginger mojito - an interesting twist on a classic that tasted great with fresh lime, crushed mint, white rum and organic ginger beer - and a pink gin spritz that had lovely colours and flavours from premium pink gin, Italian prosecco and blackberries.
Who doesn’t like something golden and crispy? The fried silken tofu with eggplant was an appealing plate that tasted just as good as it looked. The pieces were big, tender and had a lovely crunch. They came with a sweet chilli dipping sauce too for added bite.
The grilled chicken skewers with peanut sauce had a lightly charred BBQ look outside and were extremely tender and juicy inside. They disappeared quickly once we slathered them in the peanut satay sauce that came with them They also came with a sweeter sauce but we kept having the satay with them!
There’s a surprisingly large amount of space here, but it’s needed because this is a popular place. It’s so nice sitting looking out over the harbour, sipping some nice drinks and eating tasty food.
If you like tasty Thai food in a relaxed covered outdoor setting by tghe water, then put this place on your list. The drinks are great here too!
