Muum Maam
Shop 1, 50 Holt St.
Surry Hills, Sydney
Muum Maam means little glutton, and feeling a little bit gluttonous, but not totally piggish, we dropped in on their Surry Hills venue (there's another one in Barangaroo now too) for a weeknight bite for dinner.
What to start with? If you love betel leaves as a starter stuffed with some tasty delicacy, and we do, then this is your place and your starter. The betel leaf topped with smoked trout, roe, sweet coconut, lime, ginger, peanuts and tamarind was delicious. It has a great mix of soft and crunchy textures and a blend of delicate and tangy flavours that worked so well together.
Next was duck - but in a fresh rice paper rolls. These rolls were plump with roast duck, vermicelli, cucumber, mint, sweet soy and black vinegar. The rolls had great flavours on their own but the rich sweet and acidic sauce blend was a lovely addition.
On to the main dish and it was just as good. The massaman coconut curry of veal ossobucco and potato with traditional condiments also had a serving of light and flaky roti - oh yeah! It comes standard but we ordered a second piece. The curry itself was a rich and hearty dish that wormed and filled us. We love massaman though so it was an easy dish to like!
We threw in some rice and a few drinks as well - as you do - and this completed our tasty evening meal.
We enjoyed Muum Maam and were impressed with their food and service. The fragrant dishes had interesting combinations for what are usually traditionally based dishes. It's a nice touch that works well.
