Sushi With A Twist
146 Queen St
Woollahra, Sydney
We don’t know many people that don’t like Sushi, (we certainly love it). The concept of a Sushi Bar is not new to Sydney. There are literally thousands of them around, which is great, but after years of visiting many different sushi bars, we have found the experience seems to be more or less the same anywhere you go. Until now that is!
‘Sushi with a twist" has literally cracked the sushi bar code. Located in the heart of trendy Woollahra village, it boasts a sleek interior with some trendy ‘fish’ lighting. However, it’s not the décor that makes this place stand out from the crowd (ok, the décor is pretty cool as well). The food they serve is literally Japanese fine dining without the expensive price tag.
We arrived on a busy Friday night and we were so keen to try this place, we literally buried our heads in the menu as soon as we arrived, carefully picking our favourites, one by one. We started with the Harmony Tartar, a perfectly structured dish with salmon belly, delicious scallop and a very surprising wasabi citrus dressing which gave a real combination of tangy heat and freshness
We then moved on some mouthwatering Tuna Tataki. It’s beautifully layered with chunks of seared tuna, avocado and cherry tomato. A surprising addition to this one were the crispy lotus chips that sat in between the bed of tuna and avocado adding what can be literally described as a layer of crunch. This dish has a great combination of flavours and is enjoyed best if you first deconstruct the layers, combine and then enjoy.
Next up a Martini (not the kind you are thinking of). The Tuna Martini is served in the coolest glass, is loaded with mouth-watering tuna, avocado and is then complemented with the aromatic flavours of truffle oil, arare and coriander. This dish is a taste sensation but despite its deliciousness it isn’t a regular menu item but rather a special of the week, which according to the chef, they do rotate quite often.
We decided to have one more seafood item and chose the Kataifi Prawn, something none of us had tried before. You may know Kataifi as a traditional Greek Dessert (Count N particularly loves it) but this savoury version is just as amazing. Think whole prawns covered in the crispiest stringy golden kataifi pastry producing a very crunchy and delicious bite that will have you coming back for more and more. Unlike the previous dish, this amazing creation is permanently on the menu so we highly recommend you try this one when you visit.
It was time for something different, so if you are not big on seafood and like us, love meat, then don’t worry, Sushi with A Twist has you covered.
We tried the Bulgogi beef and absolutely loved it. This Korean themed beef is served on avocado filled rice and covered with thick lashes of onion bringing out the marinade flavours of pear juice, soy sauce and sugar.
We also tried the some Gyoza straight out of the steamer, not a sight you see often in a sushi bar. They are light, fluffy and filled with succulent pieces of wagyu beef and pork.
Sushi with a twist really does do sushi differently, with a variety of dishes influenced from different cultures and flavours, its set to satisfy any appetite, They’re open 7 days a week from 8am to 9pm so be sure to check them out next time you are in the mood for something different. Of course, if traditional sushi is more your thing, then don’t worry, there are plenty of traditional options on offer too.
The Counts, who review for Sir and Mlady Dine Out, dined as guests of Sushi With A Twist. Special thanks to Jessy Marshall from Coote Connex for arranging this visit.
