Sweethearts Rooftop
37 Darlinghurst Rd
Potts Point, Sydney
After a busy day at work we felt the need to escape the city lights so headed up to Sweethearts Rooftop bar. Perched high on the roof of The Sugar Mill and Kit and Kaboodle in Kings Cross, Sweethearts Rooftop is a chilled out, open air bar and restaurant that made us feel like we’d just rocked round to our mates backyard for a BBQ and casual beers.
It was well worth the climb to get there too! Once we’d made it up the few (one hundred-ish) stairs, we were welcomed by classic 90’s hip hop, friendly wait staff, and a view high over the roof tops of Potts Point, illuminated by coloured rope lights. With both covered and outdoor dining areas, you can park up at one of the communal high top tables or chill out at a picnic table under a beach umbrella to while away your time.
The summery, backyard feel continues in their drinks menu, with a decent selection of tap beers and funky on tap cocktail slushies. I’d definitely recommend trying the Pimm’s Jug, which I’ve enjoyed on a different occasion; super fresh. This time round though, we cracked open a bottle of Squealing pig, Central Otago, pinot noir which warmed us up along with the outdoor heaters. If red’s not your thing, the bar also offers a selection of Orange’s Printhie vineyard Savs, Pinot Gris and Rose, with the option of a one litre carafe.
After a brain fried day we didn’t wait long to order, and didn’t take long to make our minds up. Their simple yet mouth-watering menu doesn’t over complicate. You can select from a big bold share plate or other bar snacks, a “From the Grill” menu with the staple meat selections, plus a salmon option, or the “Burgers” menu, with a beef, chicken or falafel pattie veg option.
We opted to taste test a few and were not disappointed. The pea and mushroom arancini with herb and garlic aioli were superb, and if anything, we were left wanting maybe… just… one more… please. Biting through the crispy panko breadcrumb outer we went to Italy and back with the mushroom, and minty pea risotto with just the right hint of garlic in the aioli sauce. 100% moreish.
We then tucked into a share plate of grilled flat bread and split pea dip. The flat bread was nicely grilled with the perfect amount of charred smokiness and balanced out nicely with the creamy split pea dip. Both starters were good options to share between the two of us.
The crispy chicken burger with truffle oil fries was the main event. The chicken was crispy and cooked nicely to a tender, juicy finish, and complimented with fresh tomato and lettuce salad, with a nom nom nom creamy mayo. It was a delish well cooked chicken burger that hit the spot.
Finishing up our dinner, we sat back and relaxed another hour or so enjoying the wine, music and fresh air. The staff checking in regularly but not overbearingly to clear plates in quick time, offer more water and drinks and have a bit of a chat in general.
Sweethearts will continue to be a place dear to the hearts of this Earl and Countess and one we’ll frequent often to soak up the relaxed, modern atmosphere for many an occasion. From casual weekend avo Pimm’s jugs, to a late lunch or week night dinner date, this is one roof top bar and restaurant you can add to your home away from home dining list.
