We love a good Indian meal and this little place in Belrose has established a firm local following over its many years of operation. Repeat business and longevity means they must be doing it right – so we were keen to try their offerings. Choose from alfresco seating or indoors for a little more intimacy. It certainly smelled good inside!
We started with some pappadams and some minted yoghurt for dipping. It’s such a good way to get the taste buds going! To drink, we opted for a Mango Lassi, which was absolutely delicious!
The menu had a tempting array of entrees and we couldn’t choose, so we opted for a Mixed Entrée. We added a couple of samosas (an absolute must for Dame M). The entrée was a really tasty selection – Shish and Burrah kebab, Chooza Chicken Tikka and a crispy Samosa. Each piece was full of flavour and it was hard to choose a favourite. The lamb was tasty and juicy, the chicken was tender and moist, the Shish was delicious and the samosa just perfect. Such a fragrant filling and great pastry casing!
As these Dames are not big fans of chilli, we decided on the go-to Butter Chicken for a main. This is a popular dish and different chefs seem to put their own personal touch to it. This one was exceptional – super tender chicken and a dreamy velvety sauce with a superior flavour. Yum!
Our second main was a vegetarian dish called Malai Kofta – potato and cottage cheese dumplings in a rich sauce. Another great dish with soft dumplings and a mild but tasty sauce. The Basmati rice was a nice addition but the garlic and chees Naan breads we had were just perfect for mopping up those lovely sauces!
Ajmer’s is open 7 days a week for dinner and they do a roaring take-away trade too. In addition, they keep a small number of popular dishes in the bain marie which makes it easy to swing by after work or shopping and pick up dinner. They also do local delivery for a very small charge.
