We love tapas. By that, we mean we really love tapas. It draws us regularly to Spain and also to restaurants here that offer these tasty morsels to graze on until your replete. A recent visit to the thriving food precinct of Barrangaroo saw us window shop the huge range of eateries but then drift to Born By Tapavino. The menu looked good as did the food on other peoples tables - a good sign.
Our first dishes were supposed to be very small - but were a bit bigger. We had different ones too. Mlady had the smoked mackerel brandada, paprika cone and trout roe. It looked so pretty with bursts of colour and it also had plenty of great flavours as well. She certainly enjoyed it. Sir had the Balmain bug slider, carrot and piquillo pepper mayo. As far as slider go this was a good one. The seafood was ample with a lovely subtle flavour given a bit of a lift from the mayo. Sir does love his sliders too.
We then had their croquettes. This isn't a surprise as we almost always have croquettes wherever we go - especially when it's a tapas place. The croquettes del dia - or croquettes of the day - came with ajo negro mayonesa - black garlic mayo. Needless to say, we loved them. The crisp outer gave way to a soft filling of potato and cheese and the mayo was such a winner.
After this we moved on to the oh so pretty jamon Serrano on air baguette fritto with shaved garrotxa - a type of goats milk cheese. This was a wonderful dish. The lovely crisp base combined so well with the jamon and garrotxa. It was like a delicious ham and cheese crisp.
We of course threw in a few glasses of wine. The choices here are quite extensive for by the glass or the whole bottle. They also have a chart that helps explain their wines too - which is very helpful if you're unfamiliar with Spanish wines.
Finally we had the coca "fried flat bread" filled with chorizo and egg. We have a lot of chorizo - a delicious spicy sausage - and so this grabbed our attention straight away. It was like a chorizo gozleme in many ways - but not heavy either. The flavours were great and there was a lot of it which filled us and completed our meal perfectly.
Born By Tapavino is popular - but then again the whole Barangaroo food precinct is popular. We certainly enjoyed the dishes we had there. The food looked good and had plenty of flavour, the service was efficient and friendly too and the place had a nice buzz to it.
