Mr G's Bar and Grill
The InterContinental Hotel
33 Cross St
Double Bay, Sydney
It's hard to not be impressed as you enter Mr G’s, with its New York speakeasy bar vibe laced with family and sports memorabilia, it is easy to see why Mr G’s is buzzing. Being deceptively large with its many booths and seats at the bar, it caters for those looking for fine dining as well as those looking for a casual drink. The intimate surroundings and plush leather booth seating, are well shielded from the bright walkway of Mr G’s home inside the Intercontinental Hotel, needless to say both The Viscount and Viscountess were eager to begin.
We were offered cocktails on arrival which were both beautiful and delicious. The Viscount chose the ‘Obamalicious’, a chocolate Old Fashioned, and the Viscountess selected the ‘That's My Jam’, a fruity and fresh gin concoction.
As we perused the menu, with a beautiful jazz singer in the background and cocktails in our hands, it was easy to feel like we'd entered a glamorous movie set.
The canapés were all delicious and kept arriving until we were extremely full. We were offered imperial black caviar blinis with ginger crème fraiche, pastrami spiced gravalax with corn bread and horseradish cream, roasted vegetable and goats cheese tartlets, Alaskan king crab cocktails, Cape Byron eye fillet steak with Chimichurri and mini Wagyu beef burgers with Truffle fries.
Although they were all delicious, the two standouts for the Viscount and Viscountess were the Cape Byron eye fillet and the Alaskan crab cocktail.
The eye fillet was absolutely melt in your mouth, tender steak that we would gladly sit down to a whole plate of. The chimichurri was full of flavour and a great addition to the dish. Paired with the truffle fries, this would make a great classic meal.
The Alaskan king crab cocktail was creamy and fresh and was an unexpected surprise to have it served on a betel leaf, but worked perfectly to add some texture and crunch. The crab was still the star of this dish and wasn't overpowered by the other flavours.
As usual, the Viscount and Viscountess made sure to leave room for dessert - our favourite part of the meal, and we were glad we did. We were served a mini pumpkin pie and a mini chocolate brownie, which were the perfect way to finish our meal. The pumpkin pie was spiced and sweet but delicate and not overpowering. The chocolate brownie was indulgent and sticky with torched meringue on top. A perfect finish to a stunning menu.
A huge thank you to Patrick and Angela Gallagher and the team at Mr G's for hosting us, it was a wonderful evening and we will be sure to visit again. Special thanks as well to Olivia and Hayley from Pendulum Communications for arranging our visit.
