Appethai Restaurant
296-300 Victoria St
Darlinghurst, Sydney
Appethai is a luxurious Thai restaurant located in the heart of Darlinghurst on famous Victoria St. We say luxurious, because not only is the service and food exceptional, the interior is also tastefully decorated with gold themed walls and carefully selected furniture, reminding us of a Thai Palace we once visited in Bangkok.
We started our evening with a glass of Monmousseau, a lovely French sparkling wine, something we weren’t expecting to find at a Thai restaurant to be honest but another hint Appethai isn’t just any ordinary Thai restaurant.
For our entrees we enjoyed some lovely fish cakes and Betel leaf prawns. The fish cakes were a lovely combination of Barramundi, herbs and snake bean served in a rich delicious plum sauce. They were fluffy, delicious and the sauce was a great pair to food.
The betel leaves were beautifully presented and topped with king prawn, shredded coconut, pomelo, chilli jam and caviar. They were mouth-watering and so easy to enjoy – we just scooped the leaf around the filling and enjoyed it in one bite.
Our main dishes were just as delicious and carefully presented as our entrees, a sure sign the chef in the kitchen knows what they’re doing. Our first main was a silky massaman dish featuring slow cooked lamb cutlets in a traditional curry sauce with potatoes, cashews and some crispy lotus chips.
We then moved on to a Tom Yum King soup which we were told is a house speciality. It had gigantic king prawns and king oyster mushrooms in a delicious broth.
The banana flower salad that came as side was the perfect pair to this delicious food.
We finished our lovely dining experience with some mouth-watering desserts and if like us, you generally expect to find only a couple of classic desserts on a Thai menu, Appethai is again very different. Our dessert tasting plate included, Coconut panacotta (OMG), coconut and jackfruit ice-cream, black sticky rice and egg custard, all beautifully presented on a plate that oozed Thai hospitality.
Appethai offers a unique dining experience of traditional Thai food, luxurious atmosphere and five star service. 6 days a week for dinner and Thursday to Sunday for lunch.
