Bare Grill and Café
3/1599 Anzac Pde
La Perouse, Sydney
This is a lovely part of Sydney for a day out, and this unassuming café is in a great spot opposite the grassy reserve right on the point at La Perouse. There are a few other eateries here too and as we arrived we noticed how quiet the area is. There was hardly a soul around. That was around midday but during the next half hour there were people coming out of nowhere to eat here at Bare Grill. This surprisingly busy place was obviously well known by locals and that’s a good sign. For at least the next two hours they were turning over tables and takeaway at a great rate.
We started with a nice strong flat white as we made our menu choices. There are salads, fries and starters followed by a huge choice of burger combinations, steaks, ribs and seafood. All very tempting but we just had to try the “Epic Fries”- waffle fries with pulled pork, cheese, spiced aioli, Carolina sticky BBQ sauce, bacon and shallots. What an indulgence! It looked wicked, tasted amazing and was a meal in it’s own right.
We wanted to try a burger, and chose the Aussie Outback. This was a generous combination of goodies (with beetroot, of course) on a soft bun. Very good too – tasty and juicy. The panko crumbed calamari was our next choice, which was served with really good chips, a tub of tartare sauce and a lemon wedge. Yum!
Dame J is fond of ribs and we decided on the Carolina Sticky BBQ Pork Ribs (half rack) which came with fries and a choice of salad. It was a thing of beauty and it smelled smoky and divine. The meat was succulent and SO tender and that sticky marinade was delicious! We enjoyed the big serving of fresh Greek salad underneath too. Dame M thought they were probably the best ribs she has ever had. Dame J was also in heaven and we didn’t leave a scrap on those bones!
This place puts out good food in generous servings and owner Manuel Katakis works hard and certainly knows his stuff. Bare Grill has only been open since 2014 and you can dine from 11am until 8pm Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays. Closed on Thursdays and open from 11am until 9pm Friday, Saturday and Sundays.
These Dames loved the ribs so much we ordered a few racks to take home for dinner!
Those Dames dined as guests of Bare Grill. Big thanks to Manuel for his hospitality. Special thanks to Michael Heavener and Tony Hollingsworth from Ompty.com for arranging this visit.
