ChonSiam
38 Campbell St
Haymarket, Sydney
If you’re in the Haymarket area of Sydney, the one absolute certainty is that you mwo’t struggle to find a decent Thai meal. What this means though is that the competition is fierce and standards are high as a result. Those that survive are invariably pretty good. ChonSiam is a pokey place - miniscule in fact compared to others nearby. It’s not a flashy place either. The menu isn’t lengthy and it’s clear the focus is on the food.
We were there for a quickish bite before a show after a day of heavy eating. As such, we decided on a meal of entree’s. We’ve done this at other places before and it’s a great way to have a “tapas” meal from a genre other than Spanish.
First up were some fish cakes - a favourite of ours. They arrived pretty quickly too in a serving of four with some sweet chilli sauce to dip them in. They certainly were tasty too so we were off to a good start.
We’d decided on the Luck Chin Tod. These deep fried “sticks” come with either pork or chicken. We thought we had to choose which meat we wanted, so we ordered two plates. As it turned out you get one of each in a serving. They were good though so it didn’t matter. Again they came with sweet chilli sauce which is never a problem for us as we love the stuff.
Our final “starter” was the crispy soft shell crab. To get this for under $10 is quite amazing - especially as it was so good and there was plenty of it too. You’ll never guess what sauce came with it either …….
ChonSiam isn’t a fine dining venue - but then it doesn’t pretend to be either. It’s good food done well at bargain basement prices.
The surroundings are basic but the food definitely makes this a place worth going to! We’d come back for sure.
