The Colonial British Indian Cuisine
1/19-21 Grosvenor St
Neutral Bay, Sydney
A nice Indian meal on a cool evening seemed like a good idea while we were out doing some retail therapy. The Colonial British Indian Cuisine was nearby so the decision was easy. It’s a pleasant place in the restaurant precinct of Neutral Bay and they have another place in Darlinghurst too.
Our shopping had made us thirsty - we’ll that’s our excuse - so we headed straight for the cocktail list. Mlady chose a cosmopolitan and Sir a mojito. Both were just what we needed!
We decided to start with sharing a vegetarian selection. We had four tasty morsels - olive paneer tikka (grilled marinated cottage cheese with spices and olives), aloo tikki (a round croquette of potatoes, onions and spices), a massive vegetable samosa (in lovely pastry) and onion bhaji (a favourite of ours).
We do love butter chicken and order it regularly. Today was no exception. The chicken was beautifully tender and the flavours of the dish were exactly what we had hoped they’d be. It was a good sized serving too.
We also chose a beef dish - the Bombay beef. It had lovely tender pieces of beef in a thick rich curry with potatoes, onion and tomatoes. It was filling and very tasty.
We tried to decide which naan to get but ended up getting both a garlic naan and a plain naan. It was probably a bit much but it was so good mopping up the tangy sauces with this lovely soft tasty bread. We also grabbed some vibrantly coloured saffron rice too.
Like it’s name, The Colonial actually has a great colonial feel to the place. It’s subtle timings make it inviting and comfy for both intimate evenings for couples as well as gatherings for larger groups.
The food was really good and so was the atmosphere at The Colonial British Indian Cuisine. Serving sized were good and prices were very decent as well.
