Molten golden cheese, quality cured meats and cheeses, raclette, a vat of runny chocolate. Got your attention? This is all now available at Crossroads Bar.
Crossroads Bar is in the foyer of the Swissotel Sydney, but you may have to search a bit as the foyer is not at street level but upstairs. Take the journey though because it's certainly worth it. We were here to experience their new Swiss Cheese Fondue Experiance. Now we have to qualify this by stating up front that we simply love a good fondue, and their scarcity in Sydney is a crying shame. This extremely tasty addition is certainly very welcome.
Fondue is kind of like dinner and a show all rolled in to one. Although we had several cheese fondue's to sample, our favourite here was this one below - soft Gruyere and the harder Emmenthal cheeses mixed with Kirsch, white wine, garlic and the crowning glory - truffle. It had all the great texture of a traditional cheese fondue mix but the added earthiness of the truffle brought it to a whole new level again. We couldn't resist going back to this one again and again. The bread beside it not only soaked up the lovely flavours but also held a thick tasty coating of the cheese mix nicely too.
You can dip more than just the bread though, as they have tasty meatballs, cured meats, beer battered chips, potato rostis, veggies and even more cheese. There are also little pickled onions and cornichons too. Dip what you like! In fact, dip it all in what you like as you can even add other ingredients to your own fondue - like some amazing Fourme D'ambert blue cheese or Gorgonzola blue cheese. Of course you can have it without truffle too if you like.
And don't forget the drinks too. While Kirsch is a tradition when eating fondue, the mulled wine and the schnapps are hard to resist as well.
Ever had raclette? If not, its something to put on your bucket list if you're a cheese lover - especially a molten cheese lover. It's cheese heated till it starts to melt. The soft runny cheese at the edge of the cheese wheel is then scraped down onto whatever you like - in this case some bread. So indulgent and so good!
After a great cheese fondue, what's the next logical step in finishing your culinary adventure? A chocolate fondue of course! You can even go semi-healthy by dipping fresh fruit into the rich delicious mix, or indulge completely and dunk churros and waffle slices (which actually hold a lot more chocolate - trust us!).
This was a great experience. Crossroads Bar has a lot to offer at other times too - snacks, meals, high tea and plenty of drink options of course. It's a lovely space that will surprise you when you round the corner and see it for the first time. The Swiss Fondue is basically dinner and a show and extremely good value too at only $29 per person. In fact, we're already planning our return visit.
Sir and Mlady dined as guests of the Swissotel Sydney and Accor. Special thanks to Ross Buchanan - General Manager of Swissotel Sydney and Nick Aldrich of Accor for this tasty invitation.
