MARCELLE ON MACLEAY | POTTS POINT, SYDNEY

Marcelle on Macleay
127 Macleay St
Potts Point, Sydney

Ten years ago Potts Point wouldn't be on our list of places to visit for a meal, let alone brunch, but lately, Potts Point has gone from a night club Mecca to a foodie's heaven with a sprawl of restaurants and cafes overtaking what was once a party reveller's domain. Marcelle's on Macleay is a coffee lovers' dream, right across the road from Kings Cross' famous el alamein fountain. It may be one of many cafes in the area, but this one definitely stands out from the crowd. We arrived on a busy Saturday morning and boy was this place packed! Almost every table and chair was taken, a sure sign that we've come to a popular place. We managed to find a small table at the front and one thing we noticed very quickly was how popular this place is with the locals - almost every person coming in was greeting the co-owner, Nigel Rae, by name. Marcelle's popularity might also be attributed to their love of coffee, because, we can tell you, these guys know their coffee with a selection of single origin and organic blends on offer. So with this in mind, rather than ordering our standard long black and macchiato we went with a cold drip and a pour over coffee, the latter, recommended by Nigel.

We've had cold drip coffee a few times before and the one here is most definitely up to the standard we're used to. With a strong taste and cold finish, it's a really good alternative to hot coffee without compromising on taste or strength. The Pour Over coffee, served in a Karafe was certainly something we had not had before, but absolutely loved. It tasted less like a traditional coffee and more like a tea we would say. It's filtered coffee with a v60 filter and weighted with water to achieve the perfect balance. It had a very smooth taste. If you like your coffee, this is something we highly recommend you try when you visit.

It was time for some food though and first up we tried the Almond Milk Breakfast Rice. This dairy and sugar free meal is packed full of natural ingredients and flavours. Full of delicious coyo coconut yoghurt, chia seeds and the most delicious fresh figs, this dish is proof that breakfast can (and should) be more than just bacon and eggs on toast.

So keeping with the healthy theme of the morning, we next ordered the Green Brekkie Bowl. We had never really had a salad for breakfast before, but with Kale, broccolinni, salmon and a boiled egg, it's loaded with goodness and taste. It's also a great post workout option as its high in protein and very low in carbohydrates (it's only got a some rye croutons in it). For us, this was the standout dish of the day.

Our final dish was a more 'traditional' Breakfast item, a favourite you might say -  some smashed avocado with cherry tomatoes and a poached egg on rye toast. We loved the added flavours of marinated feta and olives, which gave a flavoursome Mediterranean twist.

Marcelle on Macleay is the perfect choice for your next breakfast or lunch. They are open 7 days a week, so plenty of opportunity to explore their great menu which has been designed by a hatted chef. This is one place well worth a visit - or two!

The Counts, who review for Sir and Mlady Dine Out, dined as guests of Marcelle On Macleay. Big thanks to co-owners Nigel Rae and Gillian Stals - and special thanks to Gillian for this invitation.
