Mordeo Bistro and Bar
1/126 Phillip St
Sydney CBD
If you are looking for a chic restaurant for an elegant dinner that’s going to blow your mind but not your wallet, then let us introduce you to Mordeo Bar and Bistro. Mordeo Bar and Bistro is located on Phillip St right in the heart of the Sydney CBD at the entrance of the famous Deutsche Bank building. It’s tastefully decorated with subway tiles, beautiful copper spun pendant lights and an impressive metal bar - the space oozes ambience and elegance. The menu you could say is a fusion of South European flavours.
We started our evening with YiaYias homemade Taramosalata and the the Crisp Lamb Riblets. Both were impressive in their own unique ways. The Taramasalata was smokey, creamy and was covered in luscious fish roe, forming a velvet blanket for the wood fired flat bread it was served with.
The lamb riblets, seasoned with rosemary salt and served with creamy yoghurt dressing, slid off the bone as we took each bite, making them the perfect starter.
We also tried the Cebo Jamon Iberico salad. This salad had luscious pieces of fresh melon and watermelon complementing the delicious cured meat which is aged for 18 months and served with a rocket and Jerez dressing. It was so fresh and zesty, we literally couldn’t get enough of it.
Time for some mains though, and after much deliberation, we landed on the 12 Hour Roast Beef Short Rib and the Bucatini Carbonara. Now, if you think you know what Carbonara tastes like, you will most definitely change your mind after trying this sensation. The pasta is not spaghetti, but rather a thicker type of pasta which creates wonderful pockets and grooves to capture the smokey Guanciale, eggs and grana Padano it is dressed with, making each mouthful irresistible. This was a taste sensation for us and one dish we highly recommend you try If you like pasta. Bring your appetite though, the serving is huge.
The 12 hour Roast Beef Short Rib was just as good, maybe even better, gosh, we loved both dishes so much, we can’t say which one we like the most. The rib meat was perfectly cooked and slid off the bone as we took each bite. It was served with a golden mash that resembled silky clouds that were creamy and delicious. Such a great combination of flavours in one dish.
If you like wine then you’ll be pleased to hear that in addition to the lovely food, Mordeo has an impressive wine list to match. We enjoyed a bottle of the lovely Eden Valley Riesling with our meals and absolutely loved it. If you prefer non alcoholic drinks, Mordeo also has you covered with an impressive list of mocktails on the menu too.
No amazing dining experience would be complete without a smashing dessert and tonight was no exception. We enjoyed two lovely desserts, The Loukoumades and The Apple Rhubarb Crumble. The Loukoumades were fluffy, drizzled with honey and topped with a creamy hazelnut ice cream making every scoop a pocket of creamy, gooey donut heaven.
The apple crumble also impressed us. Evidently fresh, the warmth of the rhubarb and crumbs mixed the with ice cream produced silky bites of crunch and tart in every spoonful.
The Counts dined as guests of Mordeo Bistro and Bar. Special thanks to Meredith Oliver from Wasamedia for arranging this visit.
