Charing Cross Hotel is in Waverly and is a very busy and popular venue. There is a lovely bar with high tables to the right as you walk in and to the left is the dining area. We ate in the dining area. We both chose cocktails to start with. Sir chose the Pineapple and ginger Mojito - Captain Morgan spiced rum muddled with fresh mint, pineapple and ginger syrup and topped with ginger beer. You could taste both the pineapple and the ginger of which neither overpowered the other. It was refreshing and very tropical. Mlady chose the Hot Mama - Ciroc coconut vodka, rhubarb and lime shaken with water melon juice and served over ice. WHOA - this certainly lived up to its name! This really was a interesting combination - which Mlady thoroughly enjoyed.
The Kingfish and scallop ceviche taco - lettuce cup with bloody Mary dressing - was such a lovely entrée. Both being fans of seafood, and Sir especially of ceviche, this was fresh, with great flavours and there was plenty of it. We really enjoyed the dressing which combined well with the ceviche. It had a nice kick to it too.
Next we tried the zucchini, fetta and dill fritters, cumin, yoghurt sauce and lemon. They arrived in a cute bucket and how tasty were these! They were nicely crisped on the outside and lovely and moist on the inside. It was a tasty yoghurt sauce too. A very yummy combination.
The salad we had was the raw cauliflower salad with raddiccio, dates and cumin spiced almonds. Sir said that this was one of the best salads he has eaten. The dates went so well and gave it a sweetness which perfectly counter-balanced the bitterness of the riddiccio. This really was such a tasty salad with appetising colours.
Sir had a steak for his main - medium rare of course. It was 300gm Rangers Valley Black Angus grain fed rump steak with thrice cooked fries and salad. It was "pretty in pink" with lovely flavours and it was a juicy chunk of meat. The melting butter on top, reminiscent of Cafe De Paris Butter, just added to the great flavour. And these fries (or chips if you want to call them that). How good were these! They were fat, and crisp and fluffy inside like a good chip should be.
Mlady decided to have seafood and chose the beer battered Ling fillet, thrice cooked fries and mushy peas. Lovely Ling fillet - cooked perfectly. Beautiful crisp beer batter. Oh and those fries - we love them! Nice addition with the mushy peas which added a nice vibrancy to the dish.
The wine list is good here and Sir had a Shiraz, which he enjoyed, and Mlady enjoyed a Pinot Noir.
To complete our meal - for dessert we shared the hot snickers pudding - peanut butter fudge ice cream and caramel sauce and the Bread and Butter pudding with vanilla ice cream. The Hot snickers pudding was totally YUMMO! It was a really tasty combination and we loved the peanut butter fudge ice cream. The Bread and Butter pudding, a heavier dessert, was simply amazing. The vanilla bean ice cream complemented it so well. This had such a lovely smooth texture to it. We both really loved this dessert too.
Sir and Mlady dined as guests of Charing Cross Hotel. Thanks to Ludovic for looking after us so professionally on the night. Special thanks to Jessy Marshall of Coote Connex for arranging this visit.
