The Restaurant Chinese Skewers BBQ
207 Liverpool Rd
Ashfield, Sydney
If you are looking for traditional Northern Chinese food, then you need to head to The Restaurant, Chinese Skewers BBQ in Ashfield. Its located on Liverpool Rd, right in the heart of Ashfield and from the moment you walk in, you get a real cosy, neighbourhood feel.
The restaurant itself isn’t huge but there are enough tables to ensure you are likely to get a seat by just walking in. The atmosphere is warm, with lots of locals inside and some very delicious smells coming from the kitchen. We arrived on a Sunday evening and were warmly greeted upon arrival and shown to our table, so we could start thinking about what delicious food we could order. The menu is a laminated and comes with a marker so you can choose what you want by marking it off.
We started off with a seaweed salad and some edamame. Both classic Chinese choices but both with unique flavours. The seaweed salad was fresh and bursting with a tart like flavour that resembled a tangy vinegar dressing. Although we are not sure what exactly was in the dressing, we absolutely loved it.
The edamame also had a burst of cardamom in it, giving it the unique strong taste with that intensely aromatic, resinous fragrance that cardamom boasts.
Next we tried a series of skewers, which from what we could see, was the specialty of the restaurant because everyone was ordering them and there were over 50 different kinds to choose from. We tried the chicken, lamb, prawn and a vegetable one, with beautiful mushrooms. Each tender and sizzling hot, evidently freshly made, they were served with a bowl of chilli flakes so you could turn up the heat (or down) as desired. For the more adventurous, ducks’ tongue and ducks heart skewers were also available.
Finally, we also tried a very healthy serving of dumplings, because let’s face it, you can’t travel to Ashfield for Chinese food and not have dumplings. Ours were so delicious, they were gone in just a few minutes.
The Restaurant, Chinese Skewers and BBQ certainly offers great regional Chinese cuisine. We absolutely loved everything we tried and unlike southern Chinese food where rice features heavily, this cuisine features a lot of grilled food and yummy dumplings.
They’re open 7 days and even do takeaway. We definitely will be back. The Counts dined as guests of The Restaurant Chinese Skewers BBQ.
