Crane Bar
32 Bayswater Rd
Potts Point, Sydney
We'd been prowling around the shops in Potts Point one afternoon and decided to have an early dinner. We'd heard about Crane Bar and walked past it before but never called in. The streetscape is low key although you can see a nice "outdoor" balcony area looking out onto the world. We were surprised at how many different areas there were inside, stretching back quite a distance. It's a really pretty place with plenty of style.
They're a bar but they also serve an interesting modern fusion of Japanese food too. But a bar means drinks so we started there - of course! Mlady had a traditional Mojito - not on the drinks menu but they're happy to make anything here - and Sir had a Dark and Stormy. Both were big, cold and tasty.
The food started to arrive and our first dish was the uniquely named East Arancini. These were in a serving of 6 and were panko crumbed sushi rice with edamame and cream filling.
The sashimi tacos sounded like another great fusion choice so they were eagerly added. There are actually two options with these - ocean trout or tuna. We had one of each and they were both served with guacamole and garnishing on top. There's something about sashimi that we love. The freshness of the raw fish always seems to tantalise the taste buds so much. These were great. We also had a tasty serving of the pork and prawn shumai.
Time for a Crane Slider each and we both went for the soft shell crab option. The sliders are their variation again - this time in a bao instead of a bun. They looked spectacular and tasted just as good. This was our favourite dish of the night in fact.
Crane Bar has a space for any taste and food that is creative and tasty. It's a great place to drop in for a pre-dinner snack and cocktail but beware - you may well end up staying there!
