DOUGHBOY PIZZA | SURRY HILLS, SYDNEY

Doughboy Pizza
620 Crown St
Surry Hills, Sydney

Doughboy Pizza is a bit of an institution in Sydney. First opened in Bondi, it has now expanded through the Eastern Suburbs and Surry Hills. You might associate Doughboy Pizza with home delivery, and you’re right! They’ve been delivering freshly made pizzas for years now, but we visited Doughboy Pizza in Surry Hills recently and dined in.

Doughboy Pizza Surry Hills is located on Crown Street. We arrived for dinner on a Tuesday night which meant things were slightly less crazy, but even on a less busy night, as soon as we walked in, we saw a steady stream of drivers walking out the store with mountains of pizzas in their hands waiting to be delivered.

Doughboy’s pizza menu is huge so we weren’t quite sure were to start so we started with a slightly spicy pizza which is one of Doughboy’s original pizzas.

The muchacho is Loaded with sopresca salami, jalapeños, eggplant and baconcini and then topped with roast garlic oil, parmesan and fresh basil. We absolutely loved the flavours and were particularly impressed with the balance of hotness and spice, which meant we could continue devouring each piece without burning our lips.

Next we tried some garlic and cheese bread, which by name may sound like some ordinary bread you would get at any pizza place but the one they make here, is very far from ordinary. Hand made before our eyes, this heavenly mix of garlic and mozzarella wrapped in Doughboy’s specialty dough creates a masterpiece of a product. The generous cheese filling created enormous strings of cheesy yuminess that we had to wrap around the bread ten times over. We absolutely loved it.

On to pizza number two and this time we opted for the spiced pumpkin on the wholemeal spelt base. The sweet taste of pine nuts and caremelised onion are contrasted with a generous array of fresh rocket that cleans the palette. We especially loved this pizza as it wasn’t too sweet but also because the base, which was spelt, tasted great and not ‘fake’., like other wheat substitutes. If you are avoiding wheat, you will love this spelt base.

Finally, we also enjoyed the Salsiccia and Truffle Oil pizza which had some beautiful free range pork and fennel sausage, parsley, Spanish onion and then drizzled with some fragrant truffle oil. Made with locally sourced ingredients (they source their sausages from Bondi), this pizza was another taste protagonist.

So whether you are after some home delivery or a casual dine in pizza option, Doughboy Pizza Surry Hills definitely has you covered. Everything is made fresh, instore , right in front of your eyes.

During our visit we met Doughboy Pizza Surry Hills’ owner Russell, who’s passion for delicious pizza is evident by his commitment to only using high quality ingredients which are sourced locally.

Russel is also a local favourite as we noticed he said hi to almost every person who walked by the store, calling most people by their name.

Great Pizza, friendly service and a comfortable setting. You can’t get much better than that. We absolutely loved Doughboy Pizza Surry Hills.
