Le Monde Café
83 Foveaux St
Surry Hills, Sydney
Surry Hills boasts a number of good cafes but this one is really good! It doesn’t look fancy but it’s plenty cosy, with a table of magazines at the front for those who need some quiet time. Warm, simple wooden furnishings and some orange cushions at the rear add to the relaxed feel. The food, however, is not to be underestimated. We started with a great flat white and a pot of tea. There is a daily specials board as well as the regular menu and all the choices looked good.
Dame M loves Eggs Benedict, so that was a certainty. It can be ordered with smoked salmon, smokehouse bacon or Black Forest Gypsy ham. It was very generous, with the most enormous eggs and stacks of really smokey bacon and smashed avocado on toasted sourdough. Yum! The saffron hollandaise on top was delicious. It was a great dish done perfectly. Definitely the best Eggs Benny Dame M has eaten!
Dame K was up for a Pulled Pork Burger with apple coleslaw, fried egg and chilli aioli on a toasted brioche bun with French fries on the side. It was also superb – tender slow-cooked pork goes so well with a crunchy slaw and this was delicious. The crispy fries were really good too.
The menu featured some great looking salads but the pastas took our fancy. We ordered a Prawn Linguine with semi-dried tomato, zucchini, spring onion, basil and parmesan in a garlic cream sauce. It was as winning dish in our opinion. The flavours were wonderful together and the prawns were big and juicy. The garlic cream sauce was quite light and not at all overpowering. We would love to have this again!
There was a steady flow of people through the place during our visit but it wasn’t hard to get a table. We will certainly be back here for more of this reasonably-priced and excellent food.
Le Monde Café is open weekdays from 6.30am until 4pm and Saturday 7am until 2.30pm. Closed Sunday. Special thanks to Claire McPherson from CPM Online Marketing for arranging this visit.
