Osaka Bar

Osaka bar is an authentic Japanese restaurant in lovely Potts Point. Nestled beautifully in picturesque Lankelly Lane, its boasts a beautiful courtyard with ample seating perfect for any group, big or small. Tonight we were attending a Sake event, hosted by international Kikisakeshi (Sommelier) Peter Gibson. To say we were excited was an understatement. We haven’t had much Sake in our lives and the little we have enjoyed has generally been at restaurants after the meal has ended, giving us the impression its an ‘after meal’ experience.
Sake is brewed much like beer and the higher the quality, the less ingredients are used. High Quality Sake is made just with Rice, water, Yeast and Koji. Much to our surprise, Sake can be enjoyed chilled, at room temperature or warm (but not boiling). So after this short presentation from the lovely Peter Gibson, we enjoyed three different version of the same Sake with a matching dish, to help us understand how versatile this product really is. First up we tried a chilled Sake or “Hanahie” as it’s called and its was accompanied by some lovely Fresh Oysters. This version of sake was crisp and tasted great. It almost resembled a glass of chilled Riesling. It complemented the fresh oysters really well.
Next up we tried the ‘Jo On’ (the same Sake but at room temperature). This was served with some mouth-watering Takoyaki. Its amazing how the same beverage at just a few degrees higher had a different taste and flavour. It still maintained the light sweet notes on the palate and was smooth and clean, just slightly bolder. Finally, we had the ‘Nurukan’, a warmer version of Sake served at around 45 degrees Celsius. This Sake had stronger flavours, it was creamier and had a smokey wood aroma to it as well. The matching dish was a beautiful creation of Furofuki Daikon, a delicious piece of white radish with miso sauce. A great combination of flavours.
Our visit to Osaka Bar in Potts Point really did make us fall in love with Sake. Count N especially enjoyed the chilled version and will be pursuing that as a regular drink from now on. Of course, Sake is not the only thing Osaka Bar has to offer. Their Japanese Kitchen features an array of traditional dishes and judging by the matching dishes they served, its Japanese food at its best. Osaka bar is open 7 days a week.
