Honkas Bar + Eats
1 Kellett Way
Potts Point, Sydney
Potts Point you could say has undergone a metamorphosis. Once a loud crazy club scene, it has now transformed into an eating Mecca. New restaurants and bars are popping up all the time.
Now, may we introduce you to Honkas Bar + Eats, Potts Points newest resident, and one we can assure you, will become a protagonist in the area.
We arrived one early Saturday evening and as soon as we walked in, our attention was drawn to the stylish layout and natural tones which complemented the multi level venue. Moments later, owner Hamilton came and said hello. His smile and charm momentarily distracted us from what we were doing and we were shown to our table.
Would you like to start with a cocktail? We love that question and the answer is always yes. After a quick study of the menu we could see that Honkas means business when it comes to cocktails. A few classics but also some specialties on offer as well. We tried the Lychee Martini and the Popo Trio.
Both cocktails were robust and full of flavour. The Lychee martini had the perfect mix of vodka, lychee and sugar. The Popo Trio, a venue favourite, had gin, sake and cucumber. Refreshing and strong are two words that come to mind when describing the Popo Trio.
Time for some food though and being a Pan Asian dining restaurant means that the menu at Honkas offers a lovely mix of Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese food
We started with some dumplings which were beautifully cooked, fluffy and soft. Some were filled with Pork and Lemongrass and others with Prawn and Pork. They came with delicious sauces and were pretty much gone in seconds.
Next we enjoyed the Karaage chicken and prawn toast (Count N absolutely loves Karaage chicken). Fresh from the kitchen, both dishes were huge, full of mouthwatering crumbed pieces of heaven. The chicken was crispy on the outside and tender and soft inside. The outside was so crispy, it held all the wasabi sauce as we dunked into it.
The prawn toast, equally crispy came with this amazing mayonnaise that we just couldn’t get enough of. Some mayonnaise with your prawn toast?
We were enjoying all this delicious food with a bottle of Helm Riesling. A cold climate wine from Orange NSW which was going down a treat, especially with our next dish which was the house cured Salmon (cured with Sake) and topped with green beans.
Moving on to some even larger dishes now, we tried the Pork Belly and Korean Fried Rice and we absolutely loved both. The Pork Belly was soft and but also boasted a hint of hotness from the chilli that had been nicely mixed into the dish.
The Fried Rice also didn’t disappoint and we loved that it had bacon in it. YUM.
Our finale arrived in the form a chocolate masterpiece. A beautiful croissant filled with chocolate ganache, a perfect end to a delicious feast that was complimented by the excellent service Julian was providing us all evening.
If you haven’t swung by yet, then Honkas Bar + Eats in Potts Point needs to be on your GPS list. They are open every day till late. It won’t be long till we’ll be back. See you there!
