New Star Kebab Restaurant
15 Auburn Rd
Auburn, Sydney
For good Turkish food it’s important to go right into the hub of Turkish life. Auburn central is where you’ll find masses of Turkish, Afghani, Lebanese and Middle-Eastern restaurants in fierce competition. New Star Kebab is a noticeably busy one, but we manage to secure a table in the outdoor area out front.
It smells wonderful here, and the shopfront window looks so tempting as the skewers of marinated meats sizzle away over hot coals.
We started with a Mixed Dips plate served with plenty of Turkish bread. So good scooping up these creamy, garlicky, tangy and spicy treats. It’s a spectacularly colourful plate with five different dips on it. They were all delicious and went so well with the fresh bread.
The selection of kebab mains was extensive and was displayed above the servery with pics of the dishes. Under the cabinets were ready-made filled pide and gozleme and pizzas available by the slice. They looked sensational. So we ordered a cheese and spinach pide which was served sliced, with an egg on top. It was super tasty and soft and crispy where it should be! And yes , we did want to pop that glistening egg yolk. And yes, we did!
Those skewers looked so good so we had to order a Mixed Shish Plate - skewers of chicken, lamb and Adana (a flat mince meat) with a side of fresh salad, roast chilli, lemon and Turkish bread. All the ingredients to build your own bread stack or use a knife and fork if you prefer! The meats were all very tender and juicy but we loved the tasty marinated chicken most of all. Just superb! This was a great dish and very generous in size.
A home-made lemonade and limeaid were the perfect companions to our selections and they were wonderful. These are a specialty of New Star Kebab and the tables were all dotted with these colourful and tasty drinks.
There were so many good things to try that we will need to go back again. The range here is just as impressive as the quality. The servings are big too so bring your appetite!
New Star is open from 7am to 1am and is right near Auburn station. Best parking is in the nearby shopping centre’s underground car park. Thanks to Atilla and his team for a great experience. Special thanks to the guru himself, Jason King from Spooning Australia for arranging this visit.
