Sergio's Pizzeria
Shop 9/605 King St
Newtown, Sydney
Italian and Newtown are two words that equally entice us. There are so many food choices in this area that simply surviving is an achievement. Sergio's isn't a flashy place but it certainly has survived and they had a constant passage of customers through the door when we were there to prove this point.
For a bit of a seafood medley we chose the frittura mista as our first starter. The idea of crispy fried prawns and squid on the one plate, with aioli, had us at hello. They were lightly fried and it turned out to be a much more delicate dish than we had initially expected.
We simply love good Italian meatballs. They're light and fluffy and so moreish. The polpette al sugo was therefore a must. It was beef meatballs in a rich tomato sauce served with a side of homemade toasted woodfired bread. It was another great start to dinner.
Moving on to mains, we had a hearty funghi e salsiccia. This dish had pappardelle with a rich creamy mix of Italian pork sausage made in house together with sautéed mushrooms. It had great earthy flavours, enhanced even more with the truffle butter sauce.
Our other main was a traditional margherita pizza. We love the simplicity of margherita with the flavour of the tomato base and cheese on show. This was made with San Marzano tomatoes, fior di latte Mozzarella, extra virgin olive oil, fresh basil leaves and Parmesan cheese.
On to desserts and we chose two more favourites - tiramisu and affogato. Both were a nice tasty sweet finale to our meals.
Sergio's isn't a pretentious place. It does focus on simply serving good hearty Italian food at reasonable prices. They get a decent crowd too. We certainly left very full and satisfied.
