Sweethearts Rooftop
33-35 Darlinghurst Rd
Potts Point, NSW
Have you ever eaten your body weight in Mexican food? We have and we enjoyed every bite! You may know Sweethearts as the casual, summery rooftop bar above the Sugarmill. But the well-known Kings Cross venue has undergone a huge facelift and is now an incredible Mexican Cantina complete with an amazing vibe and delicious menu.
The Mexican decor isn’t overdone and resembles something you might actually find in Mexico as opposed to a fancy dress shop. The staff are friendly and relaxed and the menu is simple, but has everything you could want for a Mexican feast, and a bit more.
We started with a couple of cocktails while we had a look through the menu. The Viscount had the Garden Party which was a fun and colourful twist on a Hendricks G&T, with a dash of elderflower and the addition of basil and chilli. It was a fresh, bright and a thoroughly enjoyable cocktail. The Viscountess chose the Monterrey Margarita which was small but packed a punch. This cocktail was a great twist on a traditional cocktail - it was sweet, fresh and salty like a margarita should be, but had a fun bright blue colour.
The Viscount and Viscountess decided to order a mixture of plates and share, it was just too hard to choose just a few things each. We started this Mexican culinary expedition with the Habanero Chilli Cheese plate, on recommendation by our waitress. The plate was loaded with gluten free corn chips, beautifully smoked house made chilli jam and fresh salsa. The cheese is creamy and light with a subtle chilli kick of that classic habanero flavour.
Next up were the Chilli Potato Fries which were crispy, fluffy with a spicy seasoning and was accompanied with sweet chilli sauce and sour cream.
Then we dived into the Beef Brisket Nachos. Stacked on top of the house made nachos was the soft and juicy beef brisket, paired with fresh guacamole, sour cream, beans and sprinkled with cheese. This is a classic dish on any Mexican menu, and this was done exceptionally well with the beautiful beef brisket as the secret weapon. The charred corn arrived whilst we were devouring the nachos and certainly impressed from the first bite. It was juicy and seasoned lightly, and was a great way to break up the Mexican feast we were elbows deep in.
We also snuck a chicken taco in there too - because would it really be a Mexican feast otherwise? It was everything you’d want from a taco - soft taco, spicy meat, crunchy salad and drips down your arm but you totally don’t mind. The habanero chicken was tender and juicy and not too spicy, and the sauce just set this apart.
The Viscount and Viscountess were starting to run out of space on the table (and their bellies) when the Chipotle Pork Burrito arrived in all it’s glory. If the Viscount had to describe this burrito in a word it would be…perfect. It was relatively spicy but juicy and delicious. It is a big call, but we’d go as far as to say it is the tastiest burrito we’ve had in Sydney.
We considered dessert, but we couldn’t eat another thing so decided to call it a night. A huge thank you to the team at Sweethearts for hosting us and to Joel for organising our visit. We look forward to dining with you again soon.
