REVOLUTION - BRIGHTON, UK

Revolution
77 West St
Brighton UK

It's a strange place. It seems to be going through an identity crisis about whether it's a nightclub, bar, restaurant or something else. Apart from the red sign over the door its not well marked, but it turns out to be quite a big place although cavernous.

We were simply hunting dinner somewhere and the menu outside showed promise so we went in.

Mlady was keen to have pie and their version was the closest thing we could find anywhere that night.

It wasn't actually a pie - as you can see from the picture. It was very tender beef that had been slow cooked and it came with a nice sauce and buttery mash. Perched on top was a crisp browned triangular piece of pastry.

It did look nice and the verdict was that it tasted just as good as it looked. Although the serving size didn't look large it turned out to be quite filling.
I had the king prawn and smoked salmon linguine. It was very tasty - but anything with prawns and smoked salmon is a winner.

The serving wasn't huge though and unlike Mlady I could have done with a slightly larger portion. Nevertheless the flavours were very nice and the pasta was la dente.

Revolution doesn't have the ideal atmosphere for a restaurant. Its very open and cavernous inside, even when you're sitting in a booth at the side of the room. The food is pretty good though, the service was also friendly and efficient and the prices were reasonable.

CAFE TIERE - BRIGHTON, UK

Cafe Tiere117 St James St
Brighton UK

Cafe Tiere is a really nice place. Friendly service, pleasant decor and decent food make it a welcome addition to the food district in Brighton.

The new owners of Cafe Tiere are very nice and will make you feel welcome.

We popped in for some breakfast and enjoyed what we had.

For only 2.80 I expected the toast with cheese to be one slice. Instead it was two.

The servings here are generous, the food freshly made and the service fast and friendly.

The cheese on toast was very nicely done. Yes its a basic meal - but basics done well are sometimes harder to find than we would like or expect.

I actually struggled to finish this.
Mlady had an even simpler meal - toasted brown bread with butter and marmalade.

Many places use packets of butter and marmalade these days and its easy to see why. However, its so much nicer to have them served in small bowls like this.

We also had our obligatory coffees as well. They were also nice.

Cafe Tiere is a lovely little place that has a simple but effective menu, good friendly service and a nice decor. Try it.

THE MANOR - BRIGHTON, UK

The Manor
52 Gardner St
Brighton UK

Sitting on the side of Gardner Street in North Laine, The Manors bright facade does actually stand out and attract attention. It has large windows allowing plenty of natural light to flow inside, and a few select tables outside for fine days.

The was a selection of light food and meals available but we were just chasing a coffee on our shopping expedition. The service was good, the coffee good as well and it was a pleasant experience. There is also n upstairs area to cater for the crowds.

CAFE RUCOCCO -BRIGHTON, ENGLAND

Cafe Rococo
111 St James St
Brighton

This is a bright sunny place perched on a corner in Brighton. It has large windows on both sides letting in plenty of natural light and providing a great outlook onto the street.

Its a fairly open plan place and not huge. Grab a window seat and table, order some fresh tasty food and sit back to watch the world go by.
Mlady was going healthy so she chose the Greek yoghurt and fresh fruit. It was a substantial serving and extremely fresh. She was raving about this. It had a light drizzle of honey on it to just lift it a bit more. At only 3.65 its a bargain too.
Sir couldn't resist an old favourite - eggs Benedict. Although the preferred accompaniment is smoked salmon, the bacon with this version was tasty. There was plenty of delicious hollandaise sauce and the eggs were perfectly cooked. At 5.95 it was also great value.

We grabbed a couple of coffee's and enjoyed our breakfasts. Cafe Rucoco is a pleasant place with good food and good prices. We'd go back.

SAWADEE - BRIGHTON, UK

Sawadee
87 St James St
Brighton, UK

Sawadee has a pleasant decor and feel to it. It draws you in from the street. You are then made to feel very welcome with good service and lovely food. We love Thai food and this was good stuff.

We started with Thai fish cakes (below left). They were plump and juicy and light. Some fish cakes can be quite heavy - almost stolid (always wanted to use that word) - but these were great. The sauce that came with them was tangy and went well.

Our mains were also great. Mlady craved soup so the tom kha soup (below left) appealed. Its a light mild soup made with coconut milk and filled with mushrooms. She said it was delicious and a decent quantity for only around $6.00 to $7.00.

Sir, not surprisingly seeking something a bit more substantial, chose the red curry prawns. The curry had plenty of bite and flavour. It also had a good dose of prawns as well. Again this was very reasonably priced.

Sawadee has good decor, nice food, fast and friendly service and low prices. Go there and try it out - it's worth it.

AL FRESCO - BRIGHTON, ENGLAND

Al Fresco
Milkmaid Pavilion, Kings Road Arches
Brighton, UK

We were strolling down the promenade towards the old pier at Brighton and worked up a bit of a thirst for a coffee. We spied Al Fresco and at first thought it was simply a restaurant.

On closer inspection we found that underneath it at the back (looking out over the water) was a cafe as well. The upstairs serves as the more formal restaurant.
It was such a pleasant spot sitting outside in the sun watching the world go by. There is plenty of indoor seating as well if the weather isn't great.

We just watched and relaxed - its a great view from here looking out over Brighton Beach and towards to old pier. Very pretty and sad all in one. You can imagine what it would be like if the pier had been rebuilt where it was - rather than just up the road.

Anyway, the coffee was pleasant and the view was spectacular.

GELATERIA DE LUCA - BRIGHTON, ENGLAND

Gelateria De Luca
107 St James St
Brighton UK

There aren't hundreds of gelateria's in Brighton - but there are still a few shops selling gelato and ice creams.

Gelateria De Luca is perched on a corner fairly close to the restaurant strip in the area so its not surprising that it gets a bit of traffic from people after they've eaten nearby. That was how we ended up there.

Service was fast and friendly and they have a decent range of flavours - possibly not as many as some larger places but still quite adequate.

Mlady had a violet gelato and Sir had chocolate. The quantities were pretty decent and the flavours were great.

The gelato - like most good ones - melted fairly quickly so it needed to be eaten asap. We did our best to oblige here!

Gelateria De Luca isn't located near the touristy areas so it probably misses a bit of business as a result. It is open late though and serves good gelato at reasonable prices.

CHOCCYWOCCYDOODAH - BRIGHTON, ENGLAND

Choccywoccydoodah
24 Duke St
Brighton, UK

Its a Willy Wonka type of window here that continually stops the crowds. Its a kodak moment for many as well. The displays in the window are very well set out and eye catching. Such an amazing array of chocolate forming ornate flamboyant displays.

Like the rest of the passing masses we stopped, looked, snapped pictures and went inside. Also like the rest we discovered that the shop is about the size of a broom cupboard inside. I'm sure the size and congestion inside this shop causes plenty of people to turn around and leave. Such a pity. Pushed on by our stomaches we persevered and it was good we did.

Our reward in fighting the crowds inside the shop was the eventual purchase of a large bag of chocolate pieces. When you're browsing around shops all day you need energy - and there's no better way to get that energy than by eating chocolate!

Whilst we can't remember the actual price of our bag of energy we do know it wasn't cheap. Things in this store are generally quite expensive but good quality. I suspect a few browsers leave empty handed as a result.

For us, all we can say was that the bag we bought was a decent size, a bit pricey but oh so good. The quality of the chocolate here was very good. So perhaps the motto - you get what you pay for - applies. If you're in the area give it a go.
