The London Hotel
85 Underwood St
Paddington, Sydney
For some seriously great tasting pub grub with one of the best ever desserts - their Banoffee Pie - The London Hotel is the place to be for this delicious experience.
We started with refreshing drinks, Mlady had a lemon lime and bitters of which she getting quite partial to and Sir had a beer - "one fifty lashes" that he enjoyed.
From the Snacks menu we ordered the Halloumi skewers with honey and oregano and the Squid that came with chilli salt, lemon and aioli. The Halloumi combined so well with the honey sauce and was not at all sickly sweet. Twisting the Halloumi to get as much of the the yummy honey sauce as possible This was a very tasty rich dish.
Being fans of seafood especially Mlady - the squid was cooked perfectly. Not rubbery - it was cooked just right. Dipping this into the aioli - nice! And we do love a good aioli.
The salad we chose was the Roast pumpkin. It contained Rocket, quinoa, Persian feta, sunflower and pumpkin seeds. Mlady is generally the salad lover but Sir, to Mlady's surprise was quite taken with this salad and he ate more of it than her! This really was a delicious salad. So many yummy ingredients that all went together perfectly. Very refreshing too. It was vibrant was all the appetising colours.
Having to have a classic "fish n' chips" - that is what we had - as it is The London after all. Listed on the menu as an English Pub Classic - we had appropriately Fish & Chips. It was Beer battered fish, mushy peas, London fries and tartare. There were plenty of London fries which were nice and crispy. The lovely tasty mushy peas added great colour and the fish was yum. Beautifully battered and cooked just right on the inside. And of course - dipping into the tartare - winning combo!
As a main we had Prawn and Chorizo Orecciette - chilli, lemon, garlic and spinach. Again great colour combination with plump prawns and the chorizo (which is a fave of ours) added the the wonderful "bite" the dish had.
We also had a pizza - "Spinach" which consisted of mushrooms, pumpkin, goats cheese and onion. This had such beautiful appetising colours of which the toppings were substantial and the taste was amazing. Such a good pizza.
For a dessert and seriously what a dessert - we had their Banoffee Pie. Now, Mlady has had quite a few desserts in her time and had a great many varieties. THIS dessert would rate as one of the best EVER desserts. It was incredibly Delish. Looking at it you may think Hmmm - this could be a tad on the too sweet side - absolutely NOT. Was a tragic shame that Mlady had to share - sob sob sob!
Sir also managed to fit in a 2013 tawny port from Stanton and Killeen in Rutherglen - a favourite of ours from a winery we've visited several times.
The food at The London is Delicious with great combinations, flavours and textures. LOVED the Dessert! The menu is diverse and the servings are substantial. This is very very good "Pub Grub"!
Sir and Mlady dined as guests of The London Hotel. Thank you to Liam for looking after us on the night. Special thanks also to Beccy Cambridge of Sweaty Betty PR for arranging our visit.
