GALERIES LAFAYETTE GOURMET - PARIS

Galeries Lafayette Gourmet
48 Boulevard Haussmann
Paris, France

I was in Paris last week and as always took a quick wander through Galeries Lafayette. The Gourmet area here is amazing. You can get basically anything here and because it all looks so appetising it's so hard to choose. I ate way to much here and took more away for later! You must go here and browse (and stock up) if you're in Paris.

I thought people might like a few pictures of just a very small selection of some of the range available at Galeries Lafayette Gourmet so here goes:

LA RENAISSANCE PATISSERIE & CAFE - THE ROCKS, SYDNEY

La Renaissance Patisserie & Cafe
47 Argyle St
The Rocks, Sydney

This is a quaint place. It seems much smaller than it actually is - as it has a lovely courtyard out the back if you cant grab one of the few tables out the front. We were lucky though and had ringside seats on the street to watch the world go by.

The food is displayed just inside the doorway and that's where you order both food and drinks.

We were after a coffee or two and had been browsing in The Rocks so it was great to find this busy place.

After ordering our coffees and before they arrived I couldn't resist grabbing a couple of macarons.

The final choices were passionfruit chocolate and rose.

The passionfruit chocolate was a great combination that we hadn't tasted before. The slightly bitter passionfruit flavour blended nicely with the rich chocolate. Such a great partnership.

The rose tasted like Turkish delight - and looked like it as well. As a lover of Turkish delight this was an added bonus.

La Renaissance is a nice place to watch the world go by or to sit in the rear courtyard on a fine day and just relax.

VIA DEL CORSO - SYDNEY CBD

Via Del CorsoLevel 5 Westfield
188 Pitt St
Sydney

When you're seeking a mid morning snack in the city you could do a lot worse than Via Del Corso. It has quite an extensive range of food from cakes, pastries, macarons, gelato and coffee.

The hardest part is what to choose. The best thing to do is take a lap around the place first - its a big circle - and check out the options.

Its like a coffee shop and patisserie all in one - with an Italian theme to it.

We chose a couple of coffees and a doughnut to share. The coffee was nice - good flavours and hot without being overheated.

The doughnut was delicious. It was huge and tasty and disappeared quickly. We both loved it and agreed it was one of the best we have had.

Via Del Corso is a great place for a snack while drifting around the CBD.

LADUREE AT HARRODS - SOUTH KENSINGTON, LONDON

Laduree at Harrods
87 Brompton Rd
South Kensington, London

If you've been in to a Laduree shop before you'll know what to expect here. They all follow a similar theme - which isn't a bad thing as its a good theme. You'll be dazzled by a sea of colour from a wide range of cakes and pastries as well as their famous macarons of course.

Laduree in Harrods is almost hidden away in this gigantic store. It's not brilliantly signposted so it can be a bit hard to find. For those searching it's on the ground floor near (or off) menswear.

We looked long and hard at the food options there before choosing some macarons.

There are some photo's somewhere of our purchases - I just can't find them right now. But suffice to say they are the usual Laduree macarons in the usual flavours here - so there aren't any surprises.

Laduree is pricey for their goodies. people love them all over the world.

If you're a lover of macarons - and shopping - then a visit to Laduree at Harrods will allow you to pursue both these passions in the one location!

LADUREE - SYDNEY CBD

Laduree
Level 3 Westfield Centrepoint
Market St Sydney

The queue was 20 metres long but it was lunch time and it was Laduree - fresh from Paris - so it was expected. At least it was moving. The closer I got to the display the better it looked. A sea of colourful macarons peered out at the masses - tempting us all. I wanted 6 but left with 12 - my weakness obvious to all!

Laduree is a pretty shop. It has real appeal and the crowds flock there for the view - and the amazing macarons as well.
It was so hard choosing what to get in my mixed dozen. I decided on 6 lots of two - so there would be double ups of everything. For $38.40 a dozen you have to choose carefully - it's a decent outlay for macarons and they are a bit smaller than some other places. I chose pistacio, chocolate, strawberry marshmallow, salted caramel, blackcurrant violet and vanilla. I obviously had to share them so didn't get to try them all - sadly - but the salted caramel was delicious and so was the strawberry marshmallow. They are certainly great macarons - up there with the best I've had.

If you love macarons and are in Sydney - you have to give Laduree a go - they are macarons from France and they have been around for around 150 year. I suspect you will also probably love them!

HOPETOUN TEA ROOMS - MELBOURNE CBD

Hopetoun Tea Rooms
Block Arcade
Melbourne CBD

This place has an amazing window that stops you and drags you closer. Its absolutely beautiful. Hopetoun Tea Rooms is pretty. It has a English feel to it - not surprisingly. It even has a poles and a red rope barrier outside - like lining up for an academy award.

Any menu item that is described as green eggs and ham has to attract attention. Its actually toasted bread with scrambled eggs infused with basil pesto on a big slice (or slices) of leg ham. The Princess ordered this being a scrambled eggs fan (as well as a basil fan) and said it was great. The flavours were excellent and combined perfectly for crisp tastes with the salty ham capping it off nicely. It was described in the menu as creamy scrambled eggs seasoned with fresh basil pesto, thick cut leg ham and Vienna toast. It cost $18.50 - pricey but a quality meal.

Any breakfast that has smoked salmon, eggs and avocado is always going to attract my attention. This did. These three ingredients always combine well - and they tasted great here. It was called Atlantic Eggs and consisted of two soft poached eggs, with Tasmanian smoked salmon and salmon caviar on toasted Vienna with avocado seasoned with lime juice, salt and cracked pepper. It was lovely. This tasty treat cost $18.50 so it wasn't cheap - but it was good.
The front window of Hopetoun Tea Rooms is amazing. Its a show stopper that is constantly being looked at and photographed. And why wouldn't it be - it has great appeal.

Hopetoun Tea rooms is a classy place. The service is good, the ambiance is nice, the front window and variety of goodies excellent and the food quality great. The prices aren't cheap but you get quality. It's a nice place to visit.

SWEET INFINITY - SYDNEY CBD

Sweet Infinity
Ground Floor The Strand Arcade
Sydney CBD

This place is eye catching as you walk through the Strand Arcade. Its an array of sweet delicacies well displayed in the front window - with plenty of people taking photo's. I know its had some bad reviews but to be honest the service we got was fine and the quality of the macarons was decent.
Our attention was caught by the mini macarons in the window - not because we love mini anything but because we weren't starving. They cost $5.50 for three or $10.00 for six - so they aren't cheap for macarons. We ordered three - a salted caramel, a peppermint and Belgian dark chocolate and a green tea latte. M'lady liked the green tea one, the chocolate one was certainly very chocolatey and the salted caramel one was probably to salty and not enough caramel.
All in all the macarons were fine. Not the best we'd ever had (try La Belle Miette in Melbourne for that) but they were fine.

From other reports people have had mixed experiences at this place. On this occasion our experience was fine.

CAFE CRE ASION - SYDNEY CBD

Cafe Cre Asion
21 Alberta St
Sydney CBD
We're always searching for really great macarons - like the ones in Melbourne at La Belle Miette. Well now we've found their Sydney equivalent at Cafe Cre Asion. Wow - these are some seriously good macarons with some great flavours too!

We ended up with a box of 8 for $21.00 - but nearly went for 12 for $31.00 (and almost wish now that we had).

So many flavours. We chose lavender, blueberry, caramel, coconut, dear Chris - and some others that sadly we cant remember.

Anyway, Cafe Cre Asion has more than just macarons but most people that were there were buying them.

These are Sydney's best macarons!

ADRIANO ZUMBO - PYRMONT/SYDNEY

Adriano Zumbo Patissier
80 Pyrmont St
Pyrmont (in The Star), Sydney

Who hasn't heard of Zumbo's famous macarons? This place draws you in right from the outset. It has a Hansel and Gretel-like appeal - its so strange and yet inviting.

The decor is amazing - like a weird food science lab from a Disney show. There are things to look at everywhere and yet its a fairly small area.

You should look from the outside first - the windows show so much. The move inside for some close-ups and to decide what to buy.

It's interesting to note that it's not just macarons here. They have croissants, pastries and chocolate treats too. There's a Zumbo sushi-train like area next door too - a Zumbo-train perhaps - that's worth trying.

Of course if you go there you will have to get some macarons. Its a must and they are great. There are so many varieties it's hard to choose. They cost $2.50 each and you can get one or many. A box of six is a good option as you get some variety and they are well presented. Makes a great gift too! You can either choose your own six or they can do it for you. We chose watermelon and orange, passionfruit, milo, cola, finger bun and salted gianduja caramel. It was such a hard choice though!
The chocolate coated macarons are also great - although I prefer the uncoated ones. They are well presented and again make a great gift.
On display in the window are some amazing options. They look like toys but are actually both edible and available to buy. Take for example Grandma's Soap made with blueberry compote, fresh blueberries, lavender chantilly & almond cème. At $9  it has a real wow factor.

Adriano Zumbo Patisserie is an amazing place just to see - but the treats there make it even more appealing. The choices are so hard!

PATTERNS CAFE - MELBOURNE CBD

Patterns Cafe
254 Swanston St
Melbourne CBD

Patterns is a popular place in a busy area. The front and side counter are full of tasty treats that beckon you in.

We passed by one evening and couldn't resist the selection of macarons there. Although it wasn't the largest range there were some interesting choices.
After taking a somewhat fuzzy photo of a creme brulee macaron - not shown here but which tasted nice - we then moved on to the after-dinner-mint macaron. This was a dissapointment - it was heavy and stolid and lacked the lightness expected in a good macaron.

I know this is a popular place and perhaps some of the other delicacies there are better - but its not as good as we expected.

LA BELLE MIETTE - MELBOURNE CBD

La Belle Miette
30 Hardware Lane
Melbourne CBD

The window draws you in but the macarons bring you back! They are so nice! These are possibly the best macarons in Australia. Its a big call but until you've tried them you just wont know.

The window here is exquisite - well set out and very inviting.

Inside its fairly simple. There's a great range of macarons and you simply have to look and choose - but its not that easy because they all look great.

We weren't looking for food - we were actually chasing a coffee. Once we saw the amazing artistry of the window we just had to go in - and then the range of choices blew us away. So many options and all so good.

Most macarons are $2.50 - but a few are a bit more - like the 72% Cocoa Single Origin Chocolate which is $2.80 and the Moet et Chandon and Blackcurrant costs a bit extra too.

 .

We ended up grabbing (clockwise from top left) Mariage Freres Earl Grey Chocolate; 72% Cocoa Single Origin Chocolate (Venezuela); Mango & Coconut; Red Currant, Cinnamon & Rum. They were all delicious with subtle flavours and the shells are oh so light and fluffy with a delicate crisp exterior. Favourites were the earl grey and the mango and coconut.

We'll be back for sure and at $2.50 each it's about normal for good macarons - but these aren't good, they're great!
