The Alcott Bar
1 Birdwood Ave
Lane Cove, Sydney
Once upon a time many years ago The Alcott was a cottage. When you are inside
and take a look around, you can see small glimpses of its former life. In 1957 the site was transferred to become the Lane Cove Businessmen’s Club. It is now The Alcott and still a club. It really is lovely and spacious inside and has a number of lovely spaces inside.
We started our visit with a few drinks. It was a Saturday evening so cocktails seemed a good idea - we were in the bar after all. Sir went with a fave of his - Aperol Spritz and Mlady had her fave (at the moment) - a Cosmopolitan. She enjoyed it so much she went back for seconds!
We thought we would try their small plates menu to experience a variety of different ‘Tapas’ type dishes. There were so many of them that looked so tasty it was tough choosing. Tne menu has plenty of individual meals too but it’s also great for an entire sharing meal.
Croquettes are pretty much a given with us whenever they’re on a menu . We had the very tasty spinach and Manchego croquettes. They arrived in a serving of three, piping hot, crisp on the outside and oozing with delicious cheesy filling.
We are both quite fond of meatballs, so next choice was the veal and ricotta meatballs. They were braised in tomato sugo with freshly grated Parmesan. It had a really lovely tomatoey flavour from the thickish sauce and the meatballs were soft and very tasty.
The tempura cauliflower with smoked paprika, red balsamic, herb salad, red onion and smoked eggplant was a really flavoursome combination. The cauliflower had a soft crispness and the tempura was perfectly cooked. We both thoroughly enjoyed this.
We wanted to try the homemade taramasalata as Sir is quite partial to this Greek delicacy. This delicious dip came with salmon caviar, mixed olives and two large pieces of grilled flat bread. It really was such a good dip with great flavours and we both loved it. Scooping up the homemade taramasalata with the grilled flat bread - scrumptious.
The whole experience at The Alcott was easy and pleasant. Even though it’s a club it welcomes non-members through their doors if you live more than 5 kilometres away.
The Alcott is more than just a lovely suburban club. It’s a place with great food and drinks, service to match and plenty of different areas.
