Yum cha has become a bit of a go to for us lately. we’ve always liked it, a lot, but nowadays it seems we are gravitating towards it more often than usual. We do love the variety it offers. We still know people who have never tried it too! If you haven’t - well, you should. Trolleys of entree sized servings of different dishes come around and you simply take al ook and say what you want. If that trolley doesn’t grab you, don’t stress. Another will be along shortly with more choices. Zilver has a good selection and the trolleys come around very regularly.
Crispy, golden skinned duck. It always looks so good and for us it’s a must have when available. Here it looked and tasted great. The plate was piled high too. Don’t be afraid of the bones in it. Roll the sleeves up (well not literally) and gnaw away. the meat on this was so tender and juicy and the skin was deliciously crispy and tasty too. What a great start!
We always head for dumplings. They can come either steamed or deep fried. These steamed prawn dumplings were great. the outer skin was so this you could see the colours of the prawn filling popping through.
Salt and pepper calamari is on so many menu’s these days. Obviously this is for a reason - it’s a hugely popular dish across so many cultures. Spanish, Italian, Chinese, Thai etc - it’s everywhere. We’ve had it forever with yum cha and this plate was great with nicely crispy batter on tender calamari.
Yes, spring rolls may not be the most exciting dish to have sometimes, but we do love the crispy pastry and tasty fillings they have. These weren’t a disappointment either.
Sauces can play a big part in a yum cha meal. There are plenty available and even more you can ask for. We love the garlic chilli sauce they always have, but the sweet and sour sauce here was great too. We actually ended up with four sauces as there was a sweet one for the duck and the table had the ever present soy sauce too.
Possibly our all time favourite steamed dumplings are the garlic chive and prawn ones. Even if we’re full we grab them. They just work so well. These were nice and tasty and, as always, we were glad we had them.
Mlady’s highlight of any yum cha is invariably the finale - the egg custard tarts. Here they come in a serving of three. They were delicious and she had two of them!
Zilver is a big place perched high up on Level 6 of Westfield Bondi Junction. It’s a bit of a journey to get up there but worth it. It’s nicely light filled too.
Yum cha for lunch - yum. This was good and we left full and very satisfied. The variety was good, the trolleys came around very regularly and it all tasted great. This place is well worth visiting.
