Yum Cha on a Saturday or Sunday for lunch is hard to beat. There’s something about this grazing style of eating that just seems right. Marigold sits in the Haymarket/Chinatown district and spreads out over two floors. To say it’s big is an understatement. The trolleys for yum cha come regularly and there is plenty to choose from.
We started with some tasty dumplings. It was a bigger serving than we normally get with eight on the plate. They came with a delicate sauce and a few chilli’s on top for some kick.
The “old favourite” of steamed pork buns was next. These light fluffy pillows filled with sweet pork meat are hard to resist. They are a go to for us - and we went there this time!
Back to the steamed section and we grabbed some steamed sui mai. Everyone has seen these tasty treats at some time or other. They’re a standard at every yum cha and we couldn’t resist grabbing them as well as some tasty prawn and garlic chive dumplings.
The BBQ pork acme in a big serving and looked and tasted so good. The reddish exterior gave way to juicy tender meat and we kept picking at it till it was all gone.
Time for some of the fried stuff so we had some fried prawn dumplings. Prawns are a great filling for both steamed and fried dumplings. It’s hard to know which cooking method is better. The easiest solution is to have both. We also had some pork pastries. The flaky pastry is filled with sweet pork and nicely crisped on the outside.
Dessert is always a tough point at yum cha. Some go for the custard tarts, some the mango pancakes, some the mango custard and some for the other options. This time we had mango pancakes filled with mango flesh and cream. We also had some giant donut balls that had light pastry coated in sugar. Both were delish.
Marigold is hugely popular. It’s been around for ages and has a really good range of dishes constantly going by at yum cha. It would be hard not to find something you liked here. We found plenty, and ate it all!
